This project helps strengthen student's understanding of color as well as their team building.
First, we had the students sort scraps of colorful paper and objects onto a rainbow. if you place the color scraps over a wide area this exercise can serve as a way to get out the wiggles as the students run around the room collecting colors. The rainbow was a dry assembly activity, so that way we could use the paper scraps for the next activity.
The mural image we chose was that of a tree in a simple landscape with a classic corner sun. I had pre-drawn the image on a large piece of paper as an outline for the students to work on, but they had complete freedom as to how they would go about it. We did this activity in the fall, so we talked to the students about tree's leaves changing color and how many colors could be on a tree at a time. We discussed as a group before we began what colors might go where and then we provided each student with a glue stick and scraps of paper sorted into color bags.
The students were engaged and worked together as a team to complete this mural in a short period of time. Some even added some finishing touches of coloring pages they had completed of animals that might occupy the landscape.
